Puerta del Sol
Puerta del Sol is the point from which all Spanish radial roads start, marked on the ground in front of the historic Casa de Correos, an 18th century building that now houses the government of the Community of Madrid. Its iconic clock is famous for marking the New Year’s Eve countdown, an event followed by thousands every year.
In the square, do not miss the iconic Estatua del Oso y el Madroño, a symbol of Madrid and a perfect photo spot, nor the Equestrian Statue of Carlos III, one of the most beloved kings by Madrileños. Additionally, the legendary Tío Pepe illuminated sign adds a cultural and nostalgic touch that fascinates both visitors and locals.
From here, historic and commercial streets such as Calle Mayor, Calle Arenal, Calle Preciados and Calle del Carmen depart, ideal for strolling and discovering the best shops and typical Madrid gastronomy. Do not forget to try the famous squid sandwich or a sweet treat at the historic La Mallorquina pastry shop.
Gran Vía
Gran Vía is one of Madrid’s main and most vibrant arteries, famous for its iconic architecture, theatres and shops. From the corner with Calle Alcalá, stands the impressive Metropolis Building, with its black dome and winged statue, one of the most photographed in the city.
In the stretch between Plaza de Callao and Plaza de España, known as Madrid’s Broadway, you can enjoy major musicals and theatrical plays in venues such as Teatro Lope de Vega, Teatro Rialto, Teatro Capitol or Teatro Coliseum.
Gran Vía is also a commercial hub, with major brands such as Zara, Mango, H&M and Primark, in an environment that blends Madrid’s modernism with art déco and neoclassical buildings. This avenue connects diverse areas like Cibeles, Malasaña, Chueca and Conde Duque, creating a unique route between culture, shopping and leisure.
Madrid de los Austrias
Madrid’s old town, known as Madrid de los Austrias, is a jewel full of history and charm. Plaza Mayor, majestic and arcaded, has been since the 15th century the heart of public life, hosting markets, festivities and historic events. Today, its arcades house shops and restaurants, and you can’t leave without trying the classic squid sandwich.
Nearby are the Royal Palace, the largest palace in Western Europe, and the Almudena Cathedral, a temple that combines neoclassical, neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque styles, consecrated by Pope John Paul II.
The streets of the historic centre, such as Calle Mayor, Calle del Codo and Cava Baja, invite you to get lost among their medieval layout and discover corners full of history and tradition. Plaza de la Villa, surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and the monasteries of Descalzas Reales and Encarnación, hold authentic artistic and cultural treasures.
